Whole Foods seeks out the finest natural and organic foods available, maintain the strictest quality standards in the industry, and have an unshakeable commitment to sustainable agriculture. Add to that the excitement and fun they bring to shopping for groceries, and you start to get a sense of what Whole Foods are all about.

Whole Foods Market has incorporated environmental stewardship in all aspects of their business. The Sarasota store has earned a Silver LEED ranking. Several of the key LEED elements of the Sarasota Whole Foods Market building include:

A water treatment system designed to capture two-thirds of the roof water, which is filtered back into the building and used for all cleaning purposes
Using heat recovery systems on their refrigeration compressors
A comprehensive recycling program that includes donating food and composting food waste
Non-toxic, environmentally friendly public art work
Monitoring systems to provide continuous energy performance data for annual analysis
A building R-value (insulation level) surpassing the minimum standard
A high-tech, highly reflective, white, energy saving roof system
Skylights throughout to provide maximum daylight
High performance mechanical and electrical systems
Non-toxic, low odor paint

Whole Foods became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2007. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
