Historic Wind and Solar Residence
Vue d'ensemble
In 1976 Manhattan’s first rooftop solar panels were installed on this 5 story tenement building. After the solar panels the tenants restored an old farm turbine and fixed it to the top of their building. Ted Kennedy described it as “little windmill that could”. Group wired electricity into the grid and demanded reimbursement, ConEd urged NYS Energy Commission to force group to disconnect but the group won law suit! Although this site is not running today, it remains an important location in NYC history.
