The Urban Forest forms part of the linear park network, along the old railway course which runs through the cities of Boroondara, Stonnington and Glen Eira.
The Urban Forest embraces the natural bushland philosophy of the Gardiners Creek Valley revegetation. The Forest is a contemporary equivalent of Hedgeley Dene Garden, designed as a native woodland along an artificial water course connected with two ponds.
An urban forest is a relatively new and innovative approach to developing space for recreational purposes. The area is not a manicured or ornamental park, but an attempt to recreate an ecosystem that existed before European settlement and urbanisation.
Malvern's Urban Forest features a grassy picnic area, ponds, bridges, pedestrian and cycle paths, and extensive tree plantings. The ponds support a diverse range of aquatic plants and are maintained as a natural body of water rather than ornamental ponds.
