American Youthworks is an alternative high school that integrates service learning into the curriculum. This downtown high school is oriented on an east/west axis to take advantage of the natural pattern of the sun. Using low-e windows and designed shading devices, the building takes advantage of daylighting while minimizing solar heat gain and cooling loads. Other green features include used several recycled and renewable materials. These include: sunflower seed panels, reused salvaged doors, and recycled content ceiling tiles. Low volatile organic compounds (VOCs) or no VOCs paints were used to finish off the interior environments.
