The first of our unique eco-friendly cottages was named in honor of the pioneering soul Ada Miller who sold us the property (and yards of recyclable stuff) in 1995. After fleeing the Oklahoma dust bowl in the 1930’s, Ada relocated to Massack (where the rest stop is coming into town from the east) and tent home until fire destroyed it. Fire also destroyed her next tent home in Westwood. Yikes! An amazing spirit, great role model and one of the last of our local telephone operators. Can you remember those two digit phone numbers? Ada’s Cottage was finished in July of 2002 and we had our first guest.
Who would have thought we would have the opportunity to acquire the adjacent property but we did. With three ram shackled “possibilities” awaiting us we started again. A mountain of garbage, broken windows and old timber provided a challenge to see how much we could recycle and reuse.
A few unique cabinets and many feet of beautiful old cedar were salvaged, and along with great old mirrors, lots of furnishings from friends, family and other delightful sources found a new home. Last summer (2009) we finally installed 20 solar panels on our house and office area. Now (2010) the state is required to buy back what ever excess energy you produce, so we hope to be able to put them on all five of the cottages as well.
All the gardens are maintained with the use of drip irrigation (and constant vigilance) and planted with a variety of native and non-native species and a few old fruit trees as well.
