Mshini Wam Informal Settlement Upgrade
Overview
Informal settlements pose significant challenges for city management in terms of providing essential services. The Mtshini Wam ‘reblocking’ project is a hugely successful experiment that has created more space between shacks, improving access, offering a more dignified living space, and enabling the provision of better essential services. The NGO-partnered project had full community involvement, and local employment was provided during the process. The Mtshini Wam initiative has provided a model for official policy.
