Violence Prevention Through Urban Upgrading

Overview
Crime flourishes where there is a bleak environment with few opportunities, which is why the poorest communities are hardest hit. The Violence Prevention through Urban Upgrading (VPUU) initiative is a ground-breaking project to reduce crime in Khayelitsha through design, infrastructure and community participation. After detailed crime-mapping and consultation with the community, results include a vibrant public multi-functional square. The success of this programme is reflected in the drop in violent crime, and the approach is being rolled out to other areas.
