Katy Trail State Park

Overview
The Katy Trail is a 240-mile cross-state trail that runs from Machens to Clinton (the access point nearest to UMSL is in St. Charles). It is open to hikers, bicyclists, and in some places horse-back riding. The trail was originally owned and operated by the Missouri-Kansas-Texas Railroad. When MKT shut down its operations in Missouri the state was able to procure the right-of-way for public use. The trail passes through a variety of landscapes and ecosystems and there is plenty of native flora and fauna to observe as you hike and bike from town to town. Birds are especially prevalent since the trail runs within the Missouri River Flyway for many miles. The Katy Trail also connects to other Missouri trails including the path that circles the lake at Creve Coeur Park. For more information visit mostateparks.com.
