Port Arthur Restaurant
Overview
The Port Arthur was one of the largest and most elaborately decorated restaurant in Chinatown. It is located at 7 Mott Street, where Kam Kou Supermarket is located today. The restaurant was established about 1896- what was formerly a mattress and bedding factory. It sat two hundred diners at a time, and tables and marble flooring was all imported from China.The third floor of the restaurant was used as the headquarter for secret organization called the Kaoshen Club. This organization was one of political clubs organized in America and dedicated to reforming the Chinese government.
