The City Hall Vegetable Garden was started by the Council working together with officials to demonstrate and encourage people to start vegetable gardens in their premises. It demonstrates an innovative way of using public space whereby purely decorative flowers are removed and replaced with nutritionally valuable vegetable plants. The garden at City Hall remains beautifully planted, however also contributes to local food security. The haverst from the garden is donated to TAFTA, the orgainsation that takes care of elderly which is located opposite to City Hall. This project has inspired other Municipal Departments to do vegetable gardens in public spaces, such as Umthombo Garden and Priority Zone's rooftop garden.
