A pilot project to install solar panels to power 3 traffic signals was approved by the eThekwini Executive Committee in 2012. Eskom provided the initial installation funding, and the eThekwini Council is responsible for the maintenance. The aim of the pilot project is to test the technology, establish how reliable it is as a source of power, and also to establish if the City is likely to have vandalism issues with the equipment. Once the pilot project is complete, possible roll-out of the solar panels will be further investigated.
