Amphitheater
Overview
The amphitheater opened in 1941 as a Works Progress Administration project. It was infrequently used until 1956 when it bacame home to Joseph Papp's first performances of Shakespeare in the Park. Through the 1960s & 70s , it was programmed fo dances, concerts, children's performances and local school graduation ceremonies. In December 2001, Challenge America, a nationally broadcast tv show featured the real-life hero Erin Brockovich convincing private companies and individuals to restore the amphitheater to its earlier glory. In 6 days, people worked around the clock to restore this historic site. Today, it is reknowned for SummerStage performances in August.
