New York
Church of the Transfiguration
Overview
Has been a Roman Catholic Church since 1853, serving both Irish and Italian immigrants at the time. They worshipped separately, the Italians using the basement in order to have services in their own language. Despite an attempt to bring the communities together in th 1890's, by Father McLoughlin, the Italian population remained in the basement until 1902 until an Italian pastor was named to lead the parish.
Today, the congregants are primarily Chinese, with services offered in both Mandarin and Cantonese.
