Grand Street was a major nineteenth century shopping center. It was home to Lord & Taylor's on Chrystie Street, Halm's Cigar Store and Seligman brothers hat and cap store. It was also the site of the original Temple Emanu-El. The early members joined together to create a literary society but then gradually shifted toward Reform Judaism--with secular culture in mind. The first services were in a private house near Grand and Clinton, then Grand and Chrystie and moved north finally to 65th and 5th avenue.
The Harmonie Club's first location was also off Grand on Ludlow Street. Now its located on east 60th street.
