Hannibal, MO is a smaller city that is located right on the banks of the Mississippi River. Because the majority of the city is located on two floodplains, it is not surprising to discover that it is sometimes in danger of flooding. In addition to being right next to the Mississippi River, Bear Creek runs adjacent to the city, thus increasing the chances of a flood. In order to protect themselves and their property, Hannibal has raised thousands of dollars to strengthen and maintain the levees. Hannibal Citizens are also given informational flyers that inform them of what to do in a flood so that they can protect themselves and repair the damage to their property (if the flooding is severe). Despite the flood risk, there are many interesting and educational places to visit in Hannibal, MO. For example, the childhood home of Mark Twain is a popular tourist attraction. There is also a park right along the Mississippi River that is dedicated to educating the public about the dangers of harming wildlife in general, but especially endangered bat species, and how they can enjoy all that nature has to offer while leaving minimal traces. While the Mississippi River constantly proves that it cannot be entirely controlled, Hannibal MO has taken steps to protect itself and create a thriving city. This is an exemplar feature of a land at risk of flooding because the city of Hannibal must constantly maintain its levees and other forms of flood control or the Mississippi will cause massive damages to both the city and its residents.
