On 14 July 2014 the South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) launched its first insect hotel at the KwaZulu Natal National Botanical Garden. The insect hotel was originally built during the Happy Earth Festival in April 2014, at a different location inside the KZN Botanical Garden. Before the launch, Dr. Megan Griffith gave an educational talk about the importance of insect hotels and the various ways in which they can be built. Insect hotels are great tools to educate people on the importance of invertebrates. They can be built completely out of recycled material, hence are great projects for schools and communities. The education staff of SANBI added some poetic components to the event, before everybody went to cut the ribbon at the first insect hotel next to the entrance. The second half of the morning was spent building a second insect hotel, close to the Clivia Room. The children had lots of fun looking for different natural material to make a great home for the insects for the winter to come. They did not get to finish it on the day, so it will be a continuous project for the Garden‟s Education Staff and their school groups.
