The Rainbow Homestead & Sustainability Commons is an off-grid sustainability demonstration centre for sustainable practices including permaculture, appropriate technology, organic gardening, and environmental education, cooperation, local economic development, and "small is beautiful" principles. We are located in the Dargle between Howick and Impendle on beautiful land with a mountain, valleys, waterfalls and rivers, and wildlife.

The Commons consists of a small wooden house which serves as a reception and cozy meeting space, permaculture gardens that are growing into a food forest, fruit trees, 9 bee hives, solar cooker, solar oven, solar dehydrator, solar hot water heater, fire bath, compost toilet, 2 self-catering yurts with 4 beds, a yurt for learning and craft, tree nursery, windbreaks, swales, worm farm, materials for up-cycling, medicine plants, chicken coop and tractor, indigenous forest in the making, and more...

Individuals and groups can come to practically learn through either a day visit, a short course, or volunteering. We have a menu of learning options for people or groups that want to customize their experience. These includes: compost making, food production, starting a homestead, costs of living off-grid, solar energy systems, natural building/cobbing, setting up a nursery, forest creation, bread making and vegetarian cooking, water harvesting, nutrition and natural health, waste craft, yurt building, how to make wonderbag, “free learning” (similar to unschooling) for school-age children, making a clay rocket stove, making a solar hot water heater with plastic bottles, environmental education games and lessons, and more!

Through a not-for-profit organisation, members of the Commons are able to do outreach projects in Impendle.

Shine and Sam live at and manage the Commons with their two kids Oriah and Kei with whom they assist in “free learning” from the world and opportunities around them.
