Caiçara Pousada

Overview
History of this Location:
Caiçara Pousada, located directly on the beach, was opened in January of 2006. Pousada is the local definition of a guest house and are historically small and homey, this one having only 9 rooms. The pousada was given the name “Caiçara” for the regions natives and to honor the owner’s family, who were born in Ilha Grande, including her grandmother who still lives directly behind the pousada and whose property provides the water used there.
Sustainable Features:
Since its opening in 2006, Caiçara Pousada has been working to improve their sustainability practices. In 2006 the pousada began a 3 year project to build solar panels for the pousada. Since 2009 the Caiçara Pousada has been using solar panels as their only source of hot water. The water flows to the pousada from a local source, is heated by the solar panels, and is used for showers, cooking etc. In order to conserve electricity, the lights in the pousada are never turned on until about 7pm and the staff uses candles whenever possible. The pousada also separates recyclables out of their waste and hires only local people onto their staff and do not employee school aged children during school time.
