Holmes School was named after George Holmes who was in the real estate and investment business and also the president of the First Trust Company bank in Lincoln. The city bought five acres of his land to build a school and he gave them another five acres to be used as playground area. The school occupies the place where his childhood farmhouse and barn once stood.
Holmes School was started in 1937. It had only three teachers at first. Later, two additions were built on. A year-long renovation took place during the 2008-2009 school year. New windows, air conditioning, and new classrooms were added. The enrollment this year is around 375.
Holmes Elementary also has a heat pump system for heating and cooling.
