The Newman residence features a 4.9 kW solar electric roof-mount system consisting of 27 panels. The system is estimated to provide 60% of the households average annual electric needs and excess electricity is sent to FirstEnergy Corp.'s local grid on sunny summer days.

Further, energy produced from the system avoids greenhouse gases equal to the amount of pollution an average car emits over 397 days.

This home was featured on the front cover of the Plain Dealer’s Business Section on July 26, 2008.

The installed cost of the system is about $35,000. The state of Ohio picked up $15,585 of that with a renewable energy grant. Further, the system qualified for a $2,000 federal tax credit.
