In 1946, Detroit Engineers Frank Cotter and G. Howlett Davis hit on something big: they harness the natural insulating powers of air to create a permanently sealed, double-walled tumbler. Finally a way to keep hot drinks hot and cold drinks cold. This outstanding innovation changed the drink ware industry forever. Combining the last three letters of each of their last names, Cotter and Davis dubbed their new cup brand “Tervis”. The original tall, cylindrical tumbler evolved into additional sizes and products. Today, Tervis offers six tumbler sizes, plus hundreds of customizable designs, emblems, and accessory combinations. Tervis products are proudly made in North Venice, Florida, where over 700 people are employed through this family-owned-and-operated business.

Tervis has implemented numerous green measures throughout their operation. In a recent renovation and addition lighting was updated to efficient T-6 flourescent tubes. In a new wing, LED strip lighting is used for product inspection. In December 2012, Tervis moved to single stream recycling and encourages full participation of employees by having employees bring their deskside trash and recycling bins to designated recycling and trash stations. Any cups that don't meet quality inspection are sent to a recycler and become vinyl fencing. Tervis and their suppliers reuse shipping materials, further reducing waste.

Tervis became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2010. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
