The Environmental Issues Group (EIG), in cooperation with the City of University Heights and JCU Student Affairs, has developed a bicycle co-op for the campus community. The kick-off for the Co-op was Friday, Sept. 17 at the Lombardo Student Center. The ribbon-cutting ceremony was attended by Susan Infeld, Mayor of University Heights as well as campus and community members. Attendees toured campus with the new bike fleet following the unveiling.

The Co-op is named in honor of Dr. Miles Coburn, a former member of the Biology Department, who was an avid cyclist and keen environmental advocate. With bicycles generously donated from the City of University Heights, the Coburn Co-op is 18 bicycles strong. Generous donations from campus and community members, a grant from the Student Union, and funding from Student Affairs provided financial support for helmets, locks, and replacement parts. Recently, the Coburn Co-op was cited as one of the U.S. college campuses developing bike rental programs by U.S.A. Today.

Bikes will be available for faculty, staff, administrators and students to check out at the Rec Desk, using their ID card. Bike locks and helmets will be provided. Bikes can be checked out for 24 hours Monday through Thursday or for the entire weekend (Friday through Monday). All bikes will receive regular maintenance by trained student volunteers.

Student volunteers are needed to help maintain the bikes (instruction will be provided). Additionally, student volunteers will be needed to re-paint the bikes in Blue and Gold during the winter months.

Through the Coburn Co-op, all of us have an opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint, get a little exercise, and know the Heights community better.
