Canolfan Gorseinon Centre is a new iconic building situated on the site of the former Bryngwyn steelworks whose closure in 2001 instigated community regeneration initiatives. It was formed and managed by the Gorseinon Development Trust (GDT). The Trust was established in January 2003 to take over the reins from the Gorseinon Regeneration Forum and is led by Chairman, Andrew Donald, and a board of directors who come from the public, voluntary and private sectors, covering all interests, including business, education, health, faith, police and leisure. The aim of the GDT is to ensure the long term economic and social well-being of Gorseinon and to improve the quality of life of its residents, to create employment and income generation opportunities through the development of social enterprises which will operate through the Centre at their new offices in Millers Drive, Gorseinon. The premises have now become an information source for a wide variety of services available to the people of Gorseinon.

Facilities on offer at the Centre make it ideal to hold events such as training seminars, team briefings and conferences.

Catering and refreshments are available via the Zest for Life Cafe (open to the public) which makes use of Fair Trade and locally sourced produce. Free internet access is also available to customers.

The Trusting Hands Day Nursery is a specifically designed child day care facility catering for children between 3 months and 8 years and there is access to a great outdoor learning space allowing exploration and physical activity in a safe environment.

The building is only the second in Wales to have achieved the BREEAM standard (it received an Excellent rating) from assessors who looked at a broad range of environmental impacts of the building. Some of the features include a biomass boiler, earth cooling tube, rain harvesting and use of recycled materials in the fabric of the building.

Volunteering opportunities :

This new iconic building, built on the site of the old Bryngwyn Steel Works, provides even more volunteering and work placement opportunities within the Trust, as the Centre will be run and managed by the Trust, together with the help of its remarkable volunteers.

There will be opportunities to volunteer your help with the landscape management, ground maintenance, environmentally sympathetic habitat management and much, much more.

For those who like to work indoors or want some office/customer service experience, there will be opportunities to help with reception duties, switchboard operation and tasters of different businesses, including childcare, catering and conferencing facilities.
