The stadium was originally designed in 1979 and built during 1980, finally to be completed in 1982. Though Athens failed to win the spot of hosting the 1996 Olympics, they renovated it rigorously in order to prepare for the 2004 games. After it's completion, the WWF report stated that, on a scale of 0-4, they ranked the Olympics in Athens to be a mere 0.77 in terms of environmental components. They also slammed Athens in the categories of “environmental planning and evaluation, protection of fragile natural and cultural areas, waste management and water conservation, and the use of environmentally-friendly construction technologies.” However, the Olympics organizers state that they did have some environmental success, including the creation of more public transportation, preserving wetlands and trees surrounding some of the venues, planting millions of bushes, trees and shrubs, and using organic pesticide against insects. According to Greenpeace, however, the Games’ biggest failure had to do with the housing they built to accommodate all the athletes. It did not make use of renewable energy, solar power, or water preservation.
