The process of providing sustainable housing is mired in planning complexities. But when a devastating shack fire destroyed 800 homes in Khayelitsha in January 2013, an innovative partnership project accelerated the mechanism for an emergency intervention. The Busasa IDA (Integrated Development Area) housing project near Mfuleni, through creative co-operation and community engagement, is providing 1 040 serviced dwellings which will later be replaced with permanent structures. The project includes bulk infrastructure, social facilities and communal open spaces.
