The Big Lotus River non-motorised transport (NMT) project in Gugulethu is a 3 kilometre-long walkway and cycle lane with universal access (disabled access), signage, tactile paving and street lighting. The route is landscaped with trees and has built-in seating, decorated with mosaics by primary school learners. The installation, which links with public transport systems, has shortened travel distances, reduced NMT conflicts with vehicles, encouraged walking and cycling, and created dignified and safe urban spaces.
