This place has had a history of local market since 1779. In 1779, it is only a "flat meadow" for local farmers to sell their fruit, vegetables, dairy and livestock. In 1841, Julia Soulard officially granted this place to be farmers' market. The first building of the market built in 1840s was destroyed by tornado in1896 and was replace by another one in 1929. The second one is a Renaissance style building modeled after a hospital building in Florence, Italy. (http://www.soulardmarket.com/index.html)
The market is open from Wednesday to Saturday all year round. It mainly offers locally grown goods including fresh fruits and vegetables, meats, cheeses, spices, flowers, baked goods, and general merchandise. There is also a pet shop there. It also has some dilicious snacks stores. I went there almost every week by bus during the first semester in St. Louis to buy fresh fruits and vegetables.
