This historic house, built in 1860, is listed on New Jersey's State Register of Historic Places.
A unique example of the Second Empire style in the neighborhood (southeast corner of town, south of Harrison Avenue), this well preserved structure is almost a landmark.
One of the houses built by J. Castor Brautigam, who opened up Cedar Avenue in 1864 and gave it the name in recognition of the large trees. Brautigam, an important figure in the publishing buisness, was a member of the first Township Committee. He also opened up High Street south of Cedar Avenue. In 1872, he bought land on South Mountain Avenue where he erected a large mansion. House was featured in Montclair State College photo exhibit of 1976.
