In 1982, Kenco began as a family-owned outdoor business. The Kingston store has become one of the area’s largest work and play outfitters, offering supplies for boating, camping, kayaking, and other outdoor activities, as well as a large apparel selection and a full optical department. As an outdoor retailer, Kenco recognizes the importance of protecting the environment and the opportunities to enjoy an outdoor lifestyle. Co-owner Bill Kennedy states: “Kenco’s goal is to be a green company.” Kenco’s photovoltaic system, which the company installed after learning of its environmental merits, is a clear manifestation of this. While the environmental benefits of photovoltaics interested Kenco in installing such a system, NYSERDA’s assistance, which simplified the process and provided financial assistance to minimize Kenco’s risk, finalized the decision. The NYSERDA incentive, coupled with federal tax
credits, made the PV system much more affordable, but Kenco would still have had difficulty paying for the entire system at once. However, by participating in the New York Energy $martSM Loan Fund program, Kenco is paying for its solar panels over a period of ten years at a reduced interest rate. NYSERDA worked with Kenco’s PV system installer to make the entire funding and installation process “painless,” and Kennedy notes that “I couldn’t have done it without them.” With the system operating, Kenco can now enjoy the benefits of having a solar electric installation. Although the Kenco system offsets only a small percentage of the building’s current electric demand, its environmental benefits are significant. The roof-mounted system raises awareness about conservation issues, reduces the environmental impact of Kenco’s operations, and alerts consumers to Kenco’s green ideals. However, Kennedy also highlights another benefit, which he feels is often overlooked. As he notes, installing a PV system “puts you in tune with how much [electricity] you’re using, and the resources that are required to produce it.” After learning this, he notes that it is only natural to look for ways “to get that number down.”

THE SYSTEM:
The Kenco PV system covers approximately 600 square feet of southeast facing roof surface. The system is comprised of 42 panels, each rated at 170 watts. The DC (direct current) power produced by the solar panels is converted into AC (alternating current) for use by Kenco. The total AC power is estimated at 6.7kW. The total installed system costs are roughly $57,000 and the NYSERDA incentive is $28,560.

THE SAVINGS
The Kenco system is estimated to produce roughly 7,840 kWh of electricity each year, or enough to reduce the amount of energy purchased by 4%. Emissions of CO2 will be reduced by approximately 8,545 pounds annually.
