The New York Marble Cemetery (NYMC) is the oldest non-sectarian burying ground in Manhattan (the founder, Perkins Nichols, built a second – The New York City Marble Cemetery – just around the corner). Generally NYMC is not open for public use, but the green space provides a haven for city wildlife and the flowering shrubs bloom with lovely color each spring.
Although there are many similarities between NYMC and The New York City Marble Cemetery on 2nd St., they have always operated independently from each other. NYMC does not use individual stone markers. Instead there are marble family vaults the size of small rooms built ten feet underground in the excavated interior of the block. Access to each pair of vaults is by the removal of stone slabs set well below the grade of the lawn. These are marked by marble plaques set into the cemetery's long north and south walls. NYMC's neighbor on 2nd St., Albert's Garden, shares one of the cemetery's beautiful fieldstone walls.
