History:

The New Jersey Highlands Council Building rain garden was installed to serve as a demonstration rain garden to educate homeowners, business owners and government facilities on how rain gardens can minimize impacts to nearby waterways.

Type of Runoff Managed:

This rain garden manages stormwater from the New Jersey Highland Concil Building's driveway, patio and walkway. Runoff is also generated from the lawn area upslope of the rain garden due to the steep slope involved.

Installation:

Approximately ten Raritan Highlands Compact members were present for the installation of the rain garden in Fall 2007. Funding and in-kind resources for this project were provided by Pfizer, the Leavens Foundation, New Jersey Corporate Wetland Resoration Partnership, Morris County Utilities Authority, and the Garden Club of Somerset Hills. Excavation by the Mendham Township Department of Public Works was provided in-kind.

Plant List:

Big Bluestem
Black Eyed Susan
Cinnamon Fern
Joe Pye Weed
Marsh Marigold
Soft Rush
Swamp Rose
Switchgrass
Virginia Sweetspire
Winterberry Holly

Maintenance:

The rain garden is maintained by the Raritan Highlands Compact and the Mendham Township Department of Public Works.
