George W. Wells, Shipwreck
Overview
The George W. Wells was a six-masted schooner built in 1900 and owned by the Coastwise Transportation Company from Maine. The Wells ran aground in Ocracoke during the September 3, 1913 hurricane. All passengers were rescued by the joint efforts of the Ocracoke and Hatteras Lifesaving Stations. The remnants of what is probably the George Wells can sometimes be seen (depending on the degree of sand erosion) on the beach just North of the Pony Pen.
