This compost heap, behind the Department of Public Works (DPW) on Sea Street, is the destination of all the leaves, small twigs, and grass clippings collected in the city. Other yard waste, such as branches or brush, is processed through a tub grinder for reuse.

Did you know that a half-acre lawn in New England produces over 3 tons or nearly 260 bags of grass clippings each year? So, don’t trash your grass! By using the city’s Yard Waste Curbside Collection program, residents help reduce the city’s solid waste and help increase the amount of free compost the city uses to beautify Quincy.

Some info about yard waste from the DPW:

Yard waste should be placed curbside by 6:30 am on collection day as drivers cannot go back to the same street later in the day for missed pickups. Yard waste should be set apart from regular trash. It should be placed in brown leaf bags, open boxes, or OPEN barrels, NO LIDS - NO PLACTIC BAGS.

Cut branches into 3-foot lengths, then bundle and tie. Brush should be cut into 3-foot lengths and tied with string/rope.

Residents can also drop off tree limbs at the DPW yard at:

55 Sea Street in Quincy
Monday through Friday, 7am to 3pm
Saturdays (mid April - mid December) from 9am to noon.
