Mankote Mangrove of Saint Lucia is situated on the southeast coast of Vieux Fort. Since 1960, the Mankote mangrove had been used for producing charcoal. The mangrove trail is also the main source of food for the natural fish nursery of Saint Lucia. The Mankote mangrove, Saint Lucia is the largest mangrove of the island and stretches over 40 hectares of land.
The mangrove is owned by the Crown and shelters varied mangrove species like: Rhizophora mangle, black Avicennia germians, and Avicennia schaueriana. Besides these white Laguncularia racemosa, and buttonwood Conocarpus erecta are also found. Mankote mangrove is prone to soil erosion and so no wildlife is found. A panoramic view from the tower enables to see the distinct features of the mangrove and the different species of birds.
Saint Lucia is remarkable for its natural reserves and trails. A strategic plan was formulated to preserve the mangrove forests of Saint Lucia. The plan was designed by the government officials and the charcoal producers in such a way so that the mangrove is protected and the interests of the charcoal producers are not hampered. As a consequence, the Mankote mangrove is well organized and maintained by the authorities at an affordable cost.
The Mankote Mangrove, Saint Lucia is a must visit to explore its beauty. There are guided tours organized by the St. Lucia national Trust and the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute.
