Lone Elk Park is a several hundred acre park located just outside of St. Louis, Missouri, one of many in the St. Louis County Parks system. The lands comprising of Lone Elk Park were originally part of the 2,400 acre Tyson Valley Powder Plant used for the testing and storage of ammunition during WWII. After WWII, the area became a County Park, and in 1948 herds of bison and elk were introduced to the park. Since that time, the park has become a lovely park filled with many different varieties of wildlife. There are not only bison and elk, but also deer, many varieties of waterfowl, and wild turkeys. Lone Elk Park has both motor trails and hiking trails of easy, medium, and hard difficulty to traverse. Its hours are 8 a.m. to one half-hour after sunset.
