"Israel Crane (1774-1858), a descendant of the founding family of Cranetown (now Montclair), and his wife Fanny Pierson (1773-1828), built the Israel Crane House in 1796 on 159 Glen Ridge Avenue. The unique architecture is constructed of wood walls with a layer of stone behind them. The house was given to the eldest son, James, in 1840 who remodeled the home with Greek-Revival details. James and his wife Phebe lived in the house until 1902.
In 1920, the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) of Montclair-North Essex until 1965 when the association decided to demolish the house because more space was needed. A group of Montclair residents raised money to buy the Crane home and move it to 110 Orange Road. This group now calls itself the Montclair Historic Society.
Today, volunteers offer tours of the Crane house and set up special events to reenact life in the 1800s. A ""new old kitchen"" has been built at the new location and meals are prepared without stoves, ovens or microwaves. Students of Montclair's public schools often visit the site for an educational field trip.
The building is listed on the State and National Registers of Historic Places."
