There are two Rain Gardens at this location! One is located closest to the parking lot and the other is adjacent to the walking path.

History:

The Chapel Avenue Park rain gardens were installed to beautify the site and to intercept, treat, and infiltrate stormwater runoff from the parking lot. The rain gardens were installed as a demonstration for visitors and to solve the erosion occurring from rain events, in the grassed areas below the parking lot. These rain gardens are part of the Cooper River watershed. The Cooper River watershed is characterized by extensive residential and commercial development and as a result its streams are severely impacted by increased stormwater runoff. To address the water quality issues associated with increased stormwater runoff, demonstration projects like these rain gardens are essential.

Type of Runoff Managed:

These rains garden manage stormwater runoff from the parking lot.

Installation:

The Cherry Hill Department of Public Works donated compost, labor and a backhoe to remove a portion of the native soil to prepare for the installation of these two rain gardens. The Rutgers Cooperative Extension Water Resources Program staff, the Rutgers Cooperative Extension of Camden County, and the Camden County Soil Conservation District installed the rain gardens in October 2010, after approval from Cherry Hill Township. The native plants that were installed in the rain gardens were purchased from Pinelands Nursery & Supply. These rain gardens were funded by a 319(h) grant from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.

Blue Mistflower
Boneset
Brown-eyed Susan
