A wood of majestic and mature oak, ash and conifer trees, home to buzzards, woodpeckers, nuthatch, lesser and greater horseshoe bats and a wealth of other wildlife. There are also many archeologically valuable sites here, covering 14,000 years.

The site is designated a geological and biological SSSI (Site of Special Scientific Interest), as well as having ash woods of European importance.
