The Central American Refugee Center or the CARECEN is a community organization that works toward empowering Central Americans by supporting human and civil rights, working for social and economic justice, and encouraging cultural diversity is. This organization’s main goals include working to sustain permanent resident status, family reunification, and active citizenship. The CARECEN holds immigration information presentations every Tuesday at 6:00 PM and every Saturday at 10:00 AM. A practicing immigration attorney attends these meetings to provide an opportunity for immigrants to ask legal questions. Their walk-in services include consultations regarding family, citizenship, asylum, which, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services is, “a form of protection granted to individuals in the United States who have been persecuted or fear they will be persecuted on account of their race, religion, nationality, membership in a particular social group, or political opinion”, the Nicaraguan Adjustment and Central American Relief Act, the Violence Against Women Act, and U-Visa Petitions. CARECEN also provides the community with green card and work permit renewals, petitions to obtain immigration file under the Freedom of Information Act, FBI fingerprints, Notary Public, and they offer correspondence with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. With an appointment CARECEN offers services that aid in the preparation of NACARA cases and the preparation of documents to petition for family members to enter U.S, the adjustment of status (solicitation of permanent residence) and affidavits of support, providing representation in immigration court, family petitions, and citizenship applications.
