El Sol Brillante is a large community garden located in Manhattan's Lower East Side. The garden is immediately recognizable from its custom gate, extensive flower beds, and quaint, meandering pathways, flanked by many benches. Community participation is extensive and group activities, aside from gardening, range from BBQs to composting workshops. Speaking of, this garden is leading the effective micro-organism style of composting not only in New York City but all along the East Coast. As of late, the garden has begun hosting workshops on this style of composting twice a week. During the week, the garden remains locked; however, it is open to the public on the weekends. In the spring and summer the garden is bustling with friendly neighborhood activity. The neighboring Sour Park and El Sol Brillante Junior graden add to the extensive green space on the block. Members of the garden are associated with outside groups active in the sustainable movement, in particular, and are even beginning to work with nearby schools to promote healthy, local meals. In short, El Sol Brillante is a great place to reconnect with nature and to meet and socialize with forward thinking neighbors.
