The Dick Dent Bird Sanctuary was once a wastewater treatment works near the estuary of the Lourens River. Today, the site is home to many coastal and wetland birds.

It is conserved as part of the Lourens River Protected Natural Environment. The Somerset West Bird Club helps to look after the sanctuary, which falls under the management of Helderberg Nature Reserve.
