The City of Dubuque purchased this building from the Federal Government for $1. The City spent over $3 million dollars in renovations and included a Green Roof. This LiveRoof Modular Green Roof System – Standard 4” System was installed on August 9, 2007. It is 440 sq.ft. in size with a 2% slope.

Live Roofs are designed to retain 1” of rain, saving 27,150 gals of water per acre from running into our creeks and rivers. This retained water is then made available to the plants to sustain them during times of dry weather.

Live Roofs reduce energy costs and heat island effect, provide sound insulation, look great, and can last 40 to 80 years, saving money on maintenance.

Some City offices and other civic offices currently occupy the upper floors, leaving the lower portion for the Post Office. The exterior is limestone.
