The Green Vision Education Program recognizes schools that practice pollution prevention, recycling, energy efficiency and waste reduction. Green Vision Schools receive a Green Vision Education flag to hang outside and a banner to display inside the building.

Prescott Elementary School received their initial award in 2009. They are also involved with a composting initiative. Originally known as the Third Ward school, it was constructed in 1856. In April 1912, shop owners in the area petitioned the board of education to close the school because it was unsafe, the noise distracted the students, and traffic was hazardous. A proposition to pass a bond levy passed and a new school, Prescott, was built at 1249 White Street and occupied in 1913. It was named after a famed historian, William Hickling Prescott, a man deeply interested in Spanish history.

On August 22, 2006 the ribbon was cut and doors were open to the new Prescott Elementary School at 1151 White Street. The old building had been deconstructed, to divert materials from the landfill and make reuse of as much as possible. Prescott is an Expeditionary Learning Charter School for the Arts serving a community of 270 students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade. It is one of 10 Charter schools in Iowa. Prescott's doors are open to any citizens interested in learning more about the development and education of young children.

The Green Vision Education program is administered through the The Solid Waste Education Office, a partnership between DMASWA, Loras College, and the Dubuque Environmental Task Force. http://www.dmaswa.org/services_education.cfm
