Overview
Discipline of Development Studies, School of Built Environment and Development Studies, the University of KwaZulu-Natal
As part of a larger re-organization of academic schools in 2012, the School of Development Studies has been incorporated into the School of Built Environment and Development Studies together with the schools of Community Development, Architecture Planning and Housing. Each of these, with the addition of Population Studies will operate as a discipline in the new School. The Centre for Civil Society will continue to be part of the new school. Development Studies and Population Studies aim to be a world leaders in the study of the political economy of development and demography, and in the pursuit through research, training and activism of social and economic justice, both locally and globally.
Education
Under the Discipline of Development Studies in the School of Built Environment and Development Studies, at the University of KwaZulu-Natal, we currently offers two course-work Masters Degrees, in Development Studies and Population Studies, as well as a research-based PhD programme, and a research-based Masters programme.

Research
We engage in multi-disciplinary development and policy-support research, as well as capacity-building. The internationally recognised team of researchers specialises in the following areas: civil society; globalisation; industry and urban development; macroeconomics and finance; poverty and inequality; social policy; labour markets and the informal economy; demographic research; the economics of the household; reproductive health; and social aspects of HIV/AIDS.
