The Sixth Street Community Synagogue is a distinctive pre- civil war building that once housed St. Marks Lutheran Church. In 1940, the former church became the Community Synagogue. The modern Orthodox congregation, within New York's Yiddish theater district, has been the hub for intellectual, religious and social activity. It embraces the East Village's diversity welcoming all Jews of all backgrounds.
