Military Site

During World War II, the US Navy built a large base on Ocracoke and about 500-600 men were stationed on the island during the war. A radar tower was built on what is now called Loop Shack Hill. The remnants of that tower and other buildings used to house communication equipment can be seen here. Park near the Beach Jumper's Memorial, about 1/2 mile north of Howard's Pub.
