The Baltimore Orioles Spring Training facility at Ed Smith Stadium scores a grand slam by meeting, and exceeding many of the environmental standards in the Green Business Partnership program. Seventy percent of Ed Smith Stadium’s annual electricity use is offset by renewable energy sources. Solar panels heat locker room water. Reclaimed water is used for toilet flushing in restrooms. Reflective roofing materials reduce the heat island effect. The fields and landscaping are irrigated with reclaimed water. Fans can’t miss the abundant “Fan Can” recycling stations modeled after an Orioles batting helmet. The site is bicycle and public transportation accessible.

The Baltimore Orioles became a Sarasota County Green Business Partner in 2013. The Green Business Partnership (GBP) encourages environmental stewardship in the commercial sector, and recognizes businesses that make an extra effort to operate in an environmentally responsible manner. This collaborative effort includes businesses, business organizations and local governments. The GBP was initiated through a grant awarded by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection to Sarasota County.
