In 1889, the land was owned by Somers T. Champion, who had been a captain in the Civil War, became a superintendent in the Methodist run Atlantic Highlands Association, and in 1890 a Borough Commissioner. Here in 1893, Ezra Champion built the Portland Hotel, one of the largest and most important in Atlantic Highlands. After the hotel burned down in in 1903, the present house was built as a private residence in 1907. Covered in gray clapboard with white trim, the house has several new-classical elements: Ionic columns on front and rear porches, including four columns tow stories high supporting the front porch with its suspended lantern; dentil and bracket molding under the eaves; in the rear, two fanlight semi-circular windows set into the roof and one in the pediment of the porch.
