Wolmido
Overview
Wolmido is an island which its name explains how it looks. ‘Wol’ means ‘moon’ and ‘mi’ means ‘tail’ in Korean. This island is named as ‘moon’s tail’ because it looks like the tail of a half-moon. Wolmido has played an important role in the Korean history. Because this island was located in a very important route ships to enter the sea, it was involved in many wars. In Joseon dynasty, Wolmido was used as a military training camp, and as Joseon developed into a modern form, the coal storage of the Russian navy and the Japanese navy base were also constructed in Wolmido. Since then, this island has been under an intense competition between nations. During the Japanese colonial era, it was ruled by Japan, but after the independence of Korea, the Korean War soon occurred, and Wolmido was chosen for Operation Chromite to be carried out.
Now, Wolmido became a tourist attraction with arcades, beach, amusement park, cafes and restaurants. Anyone can enjoy the beautiful view of the ocean in the cafes, or have a fun day with his family at the amusement park. Wolmido amusement park is especially famous for its thrilling pirate ship ride and the disco ride. One can also enjoy fresh seafood in restaurants of Wolmido. This island is closely located to China Town, and is also considered one of the best dating courses for couples.
