Many of the items sold at Trader Joe's are recognized as environmentally friendly products. In 2001 Trader Joe's pledged to drop all genetically modified food from their stores. In 2007 they began to phase out imported goods from China due to concerns about the country's organic food standards. In 2009 the company also pledged to use the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch program (http://www.montereybayaquarium.org/cr/seafoodwatch.aspx) when making decisions regarding their purchases of sustainable seafood. They will be offering only sustainable seafood in their stores by December 31, 2012.
